Gut Health Bullshit: 6 Myths to Ditch After 40

You’ve seen the ads (and some influencers): flashy cleanses, miracle detox teas, and colonic deals promising to scrub your insides cleaner than your Grindr inbox.

The problem is that most of it is bullshit. For gay men over 40, chasing gut “quick fixes” can do more harm than good.

Let’s bust some myths so you can stop wasting money, protect your gut, and really start to feel better.

Myth #1: You Need a Cleanse to “Detox Your System”

Your body already has a detox system and it’s called your liver and kidneys. Your liver works tirelessly to convert harmful substances into water-soluble waste that your kidneys can then efficiently flush out.

Juice cleanses, lemon cayenne shots, and expensive powders don’t “flush out toxins.” Mostly, they flush out your cash.

Instead:

  • Eat a variety of fiber-rich foods (veggies, beans, fruits).
  • Drink enough water.
  • Get quality sleep.

Your body’s natural detox crew is working 24/7. No $99 juice plan required.

Myth #2: Colonics Are the Secret to a Healthy Gut

Unless you’ve got medical issues like severe constipation and your doctor recommends it, nobody needs high-pressure water jets up their ass. Seriously. That doesn’t even sound fun.

Colonics might temporarily flush things out—but they can also:

  • Wipe out healthy bacteria.
  • Irritate your colon lining.
  • Increase dehydration risk.

Want a healthier gut? Feed it fiber and stay hydrated. Save the money (and the awkward conversations with strangers about your bowel movements).

Myth #3: Detox Teas Help You Slim Down and “Cleanse”

Those skinny teas? They’re mostly laxatives in disguise. You’re losing water weight, not fat. The gut chaos they cause can leave you running for the bathroom faster than a drag queen running late for her set. If you’ve ever done the prep for a colonoscopy, you know what that is like.

Instead of tea-based torture:

  • Focus on balanced meals.
  • Move your body regularly.
  • Don’t fall for influencer bullshit.

Myth #4: Probiotics Fix Everything

Probiotics aren’t magic. Yes—they can help some people. But they’re strain-specific and condition-specific.

Different strains do different jobs. For example, the strain Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG is well-studied for helping with antibiotic-associated diarrhea, while Bifidobacterium infantis 35624 has shown promise for IBS symptoms. Grabbing a generic bottle off the shelf is like sending a plumber to fix your electricity—it’s the wrong tool for the job.

Before dropping $50 on probiotic pills, talk to your doctor—or better yet, look at your overall habits. A daily probiotic can’t rescue you if your meals are chaos and you’re chronically stressed.

Myth #5: Gluten Is the Enemy of Gut Health

Unless you have celiac disease or a medically diagnosed gluten sensitivity, there’s no scientific reason to avoid gluten. For most people, whole grains with gluten are actually a great source of fiber—which your gut bacteria love.

I was recently diagnosed with celiac disease. I knew I had issues with gluten for a long time, but really didn’t want to accept it. Things finally got to a point that I was in toilet hell – all day every day – for a month and a half. I wouldn’t wish that torture on anyone. So, for me, gluten really is the enemy.  And that sucks because gluten-free foods aren’t the same.

So, if you feel like gluten messes with your gut in a weird, gut-wrenching ways, don’t just guess:

  • Keep a simple food/symptom journal for a couple of weeks. Note when symptoms show up and what you ate beforehand.
  • Talk to your doctor. Ask about tests to check for celiac or non-celiac gluten sensitivity.

Don’t ditch gluten just because it’s trendy. You deserve real answers, not guesses.

Myth #6: All Carbs Are Bad for Your Gut

This one drives me nuts. Not all carbs are evil.

Sure, overdoing refined carbs (think white bread, pastries, candy) can mess with blood sugar and leave your gut bloated. They might even disrupt your gut microbiome. But carbs also include:

  • Whole grains
  • Beans and legumes
  • Vegetables and fruits

These complex carbs feed your good gut bacteria and keep digestion humming. They’re essential for gut health—not something to fear and avoid.

Cutting out all carbs won’t magically “fix your gut.” It’ll just leave you tired, cranky, and probably pretty constipated.

Your Takeaway

Here’s what I want you to walk away with:

  • Your body detoxes itself—no cleanses required.
  • Colonics aren’t a gut health miracle (or a fun Friday night).
  • Detox teas = bathroom emergencies, not real weight loss.
  • Probiotics help some people—but they’re not cure-alls, and the strain matters.
  • Gluten isn’t the enemy unless you truly have a medical reason to avoid it.
  • Carbs—especially the complex kind—are your gut’s best friend.
  • Real gut health comes from balanced eating, stress management, and sustainable habits.
